It may be worth reminding ourselves of a few key points in time. China joined the WTO in 2001. As the chart shows, the country went on a spectacular streak. Growth accelerated, climbing to a peak of 14.2% annual growth in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, the world experienced what economists dubbed the “Great Recession”. China’s growth slowed to 9%, whilst the US’s went down to minus 2.6% and OECD member countries’ as a whole dropped to as low as minus 3.4%.
