Data from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)7 shows methane emissions have risen steadily since 1980s (Figure 1, left). In 2023, agriculture was the largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions, responsible for 46% of global methane emissions, followed by the energy sector (nearly one-third), and waste management (19%).
