The United Kingdom has experienced low economic growth since the previous election in December 2019. In the second half of 2023, the economy was particularly weak and there has been no substantial growth in economic activity over the past two years. This low trend growth is illustrated by Figure 1, which shows real GDP per head over past decade, with a line to denote the output level prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
