The BBNJ Agreement is the third implementing agreement of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). UNCLOS recognizes the interrelated nature of ocean issues and the need to address them holistically, setting out the legal framework within which all activities in the ocean and seas must be carried out. Currently, 168 nations and the European Union are Parties to UNCLOS, which entered into force in 1994. The BBNJ Agreement itself was adopted by consensus on 19 June 2023, after almost t
