Depending on the concept2 used, one-third to half of the world’s population falls into the BoP category. Based on the World Bank thresholds for relative poverty, more than half (54.9%) of the 4.7 billion people in Asia and the Pacific live at the BoP, while 5.7% live in extreme poverty. Often, these groups are poorly served, are part of the informal economy, or live in rural areas. These people are often seen as relatively unattractive commercially and uncompetitive. Their consumption pattern
