To mitigate the risks of powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems dominating humanity, I consider how humans and powerful AIs may coexist under conditions of mutual dependence and vulnerability. I examine dependency relationships in ecology, geopolitics, and historical technologies to provide insight on the conditions that will foster balanced dependencies between humans and AIs. I explore dependencies of humans on AIs, and AIs on humans to ground policies that manage our vulnerabilities
