Even though China’s first theme park, Splendid China, opened in Shenzhen in 1989 and Disneyland entered 27 years later in 2016, local theme parks have struggled to match Disneyland’s strong story and immersive experience. However, they are slowly narrowing the gap by building their own Chinese characters and stories.
